Vosper, Josephine Marie “Nee”

Josephine Marie (Schickler, O'Donnell) Vosper was born on September 21, 1921 in Coldwater, NY and passed away peacefully at home in Georgia on July 29, 2018. Her parents immigrated to this country from Germany and Switzerland before they married and began their life together. Josephine was the youngest of nine children and came of age during the Great Depression. Standing barely 5ft tall and strikingly beautiful, Joan was always fiercely independent and hard-working with a great sense of humor. Along with helping on her family farm, she also excelled in her studies and graduated high school at the age of 14. She inherited a love for gardening, music, dancing, and playing cards from her parents.

Joan met her first husband, Robert, at a carnival and was attracted to his dashing good looks, intelligence, musical gifts, and gregarious personality. She always pointed to marrying him as the best decision of her life, as the two of them welcomed three beautiful children, Joseph Michael, Jeanne Marie, and Robert Francis. Josephine raised her family on a 50-acre farm in Spencerport, NY. She was always very industrious and gave all she had to her children and her family. She lived by her father’s favorite motto, “if you owe a nickel, you don’t own a nickel.” She was able to use free passes from work to travel with her children to such locales as an Arizona dude ranch, California, Acapulco, and Europe. Christmas was always her favorite holiday, and she loved to decorate a large real tree with different themes every year. Pink and silver ornaments and tassels were her favorite. Josephine considered parenthood her greatest joy and accomplishment. Later in life, she was lucky enough to find a lovely second husband, Raymond Vosper “Poppy” who loved her and her family.

In addition to Joan’s three cherished children, she enjoyed five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, a source of endless love and pride. Although she lived in the Rochester, NY area for 90 years, she spent her final years in Georgia watching birds from her back porch, playing cards, and best of all spending time with her beloved family, especially enjoying the laughter, hugs, and smiles from her great-grandchildren. Joan was always a fierce competitor and a fighter. She was a two-time cancer survivor and lived with Parkinson’s disease for more than twenty years. Near the end of her life, she was asked what is the most important gift that we can give another human being, and her answer embodies all that she was- “true love.”

Joan is predeceased by; her loving parents; eight siblings; husbands Robert, and Raymond. She is survived by; her three adoring children, Joseph (Barbara) O’Donnell, Jeanne Froehler, and Robert O’Donnell (Carolyn Newell); five grandchildren, Michael (Holly) Froehler, Jessica Marie (Marc) Miller, Shannon O’Donnell, Lindsey O’Donnell, and Colleen (Philip) Diamantis; and five treasured great-grandchildren, Joelle Marie, Neva and PJ Miller, and Elise and Max Froehler; as well as several nieces and nephews. Josephine Marie will be laid to eternal rest alongside her family at Holy Ghost Cemetery in Gates, NY. Funeral services will be held at James R. Gray Funeral Home, 1530 Buffalo Road, Rochester, NY on Friday, August 3, 2018 at 10:00 am, followed immediately by the interment.
